This research also included fermentation studies on the using of glycerol by-product from enzyme process as a carbon source for yeast growth.

Main Research focus:
1. Biodiesel
  • evaluating enzymatic process using immobilized lipase, for recycling
  • Using new technique such as sonication to improve the efficiency of the process
  • Optimizing biodiesel production at the pilot scale (using 200 L plant)
  • Developing a process to utilize the glycerol by-product from pilot plant
2. Bio-ethanol
  • Process development focusing on cassava, breadfruit and nonu for ethanol production at the lab scale
  • Investigate strategies to improve the bio-ethanol production using novel techniques such as sonication and microwave pretreatments.

Biography:

Life is full of many surprises, because I didn’t see myself working in a quiet place under the breezy trees of Nafanua and facing the green mountain range of Upolu. I was unsure and uncertain whether this was the path I was destined for. After planting my feet and got myself focus to the working environment, I finally confront myself that this is the place to be. After spending five (5) years in Japan for my master and doctorate degrees in Animal and Food Hygiene, I decided to come home to use the experience and expertise for the benefit of Samoa.

Being a scientist at the Scientific Research Organization of Samoa (SROS) is a privilege which enables me to work with other scientists of Samoa to contribute and stipulate the organizations objectives and functions.

Researches of interests involve the extractions and identifications of functional and bioactive compounds from:
- Medicinal (herbal) plants which posses’ properties to fight diseases.
- Traditional fermented food of Samoa which could incorporate into functional food.

Qualifications:
B.Sc (USP)., M.Sc, Ph.D (Japan).
