Biography:

“Through science, I believe we can make a difference” graduated from Waikato University (Hamilton, NZ) in 2004 with Bachelor degree in Resource and Environmental Planning. In late 2004 to mid 2007 have worked for MNRE:DEC as a terrestrial biodiversity researcher, focusing on bird monitoring and surveying and invasive species research for managing their spread in Samoa. In mid 2007, I worked at SROS in the renewable energy division, focusing on biofuels mainly Biodiesel production and laboratory research. In 2010 to 2011 have studied at University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), doing a Masters by Research. Research looked at comparison of three biodiesel production process using an acid, alkali and enzyme catalysts. This research also included fermentation studies on the using of glycerol by-product from enzyme process as a carbon source for yeast growth.

Main Research focus:
1. Biodiesel
  • evaluating enzymatic process using immobilized lipase, for recycling
  • Using new technique such as sonication to improve the efficiency of the process
  • Optimizing biodiesel production at the pilot scale (using 200 L plant)
  • Developing a process to utilize the glycerol by-product from pilot plant
2. Bio-ethanol
  • Process development focusing on cassava, breadfruit and nonu for ethanol production at the lab scale
  • Investigate strategies to improve the bio-ethanol production using novel techniques such as sonication and microwave pretreatments.

Qualifications:
  • 2010-2011 Masters Degree by Research: School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.
  • 2007 Certificate in Biotechnology Application in Food Industry (Beijing China)
  • 2006 Certificate in GIS application in Man and Biosphere Reserves (Beijing, China)
  • 2001-2004 Bachelor of Social Science (University of Waikato)
Principal Research Scientist

Biography:

Julian Wong Soon a graduate from Newcastle University, Australia studied Bachelor of Chemical Engineering majoring in Chemistry and Engineering. Prior working with SROS she built her scientific capacity by closely working with Professor Eric Kennedy and Associate Professor Michael Stockenhuber under the Newcastle Institute of Energy Resources in developing metal based catalysis and regeneration of dehydration reactions. Her final year projects focused mainly on the methanation of carbon dioxide by catalysis reactions and the conversion of crude glycerol to acrylic acid.
Having the opportunity to be part of where science can revolutionise is an honour as all Scientists focus on tackling obstacles in Samoa's economy by adding value to local produce through our disciplinary research and depending on God to give us strength and wisdom to pursue the impossibilities we face today. "I can do all things through Him who gives me strength." Phil 4:13

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering (Newcastle University,Aus), Diploma in Administrative Studies (Tesese Institute of Technology), Science Certificate (NUS)

Biography:
Graduated from the University of Sydney in 2012 with a Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) focusing essentially on orthopaedic engineering. My core area of interest in university was on prosthetics design looking into biomaterials, biomechanics and biocompatibility as well as drug approval processes. This encompassed planning efficient clinical trials to meet with the ISO standards to gain approval from the regulatory government body. As such, working with SROS has enabled me to put to use my knowledge of ISO requisites and apply it to safe laboratory practice.

Qualifications:
Bachelor of Engineering (Biomedical) from University of Sydney
