FAO SIDS Solutions Forum 2024: Showcasing Samoa’s Cocoa and Agribusiness Innovations

The 2024 FAO SIDS Solutions Forum, held from 5-8 November in Fiji, brought together leaders and innovators from the Pacific region to discuss transformative solutions for agrifood systems. The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) actively participated, contributing to discussions on the theme of “Building the Blue Pacific Continent through Production and a Better Environment.”

Workshop validates Samoa’s first National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy,paving way to launch at CHOGM

Representatives of line ministries with a stake in science, technology and innovation for development and representatives of the National University of Samoa have validated the draft National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy at a workshop at Nafanua convened on 2nd October by the Honorable Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries. The involvement of multiple ministries reflects the fact that, as the minister put it, ‘science is everywhere’. The workshop was hosted by the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa.

As part of ACIAR the project “Responding to emerging pest and disease threats to horticulture
in the Pacific islands” (HORT 2016 185), Workshops are being held in Samoa and Tonga to
discuss strategies to control the most destructive citrus pest and a recent introduction into the
South Pacific Islands, the Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP).

Strengthening Samoa’s Quality Infrastructure: An Insightful Visit to SROS by International Experts and Ministries

In a significant step toward developing a National Quality Policy for Samoa, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour, in collaboration with the PACER Plus Program and the British Standards Institution (BSI Group), organized a series of face-to-face stakeholder consultations. A key highlight of these efforts was the site visit to the Scientific Research Organization of Samoa (SROS) by Dr. George Bamopoulos and Dr. Nahyun Kim from the BSI Group, along with representatives from the Kiribati Ministry of Commerce Industry & Cooperatives (MCIC) and the Samoa Ministry of Commerce Industry and Labour (MCIL).

Economic Sector Development Committee Visit to SROS

The Samoa Parliamentary Economic Sector Development Committee, led by Chairman Niuava Eti L Malolo, recently visited the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (SROS) on February 13, 2024. The primary focus of the delegation’s visit was to assess the organization’s operations and identify opportunities for further development, with the ultimate goal of enhancing its ability to serve the public with high-quality scientific research and services.

Samoa in a significant collaborative initiative through the provision of Food Processing Machines
under its Economic and Social Development Programme (ESDP).

S.R.O.S. acquiring equipment to determine variant.

The Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa (S.R.O.S.) says it is acquiring more “consumables” to enable it to determine the variant of positive COVID-19 cases detected at Samoa’s borders.

The Government-funded local scientific research entity released a press statement on Monday highlighting its capabilities, after the Samoa Observer reported on the approval by the Cabinet last Wednesday for the S.R.O.S. to assist the Ministry of Health (M.O.H.) run COVID-19 tests on the 300-plus people currently in managed isolation in its Sunday Samoan edition.

SROS-LED RESEARCH REVEALS MATALAFI AS EFFECTIVE AS IBUPROFEN AS AN ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AGENT

Samoan medicinal plant matalafi (Psychotria insularum), primarily used to treat “ma’i aitu” and various types of inflammation has been scientifically proven to have anti-inflammatory activity, in a recent study published in the prestigious Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) of the USA (article link: https://www.pnas.org/content/118/45/e2100880118).

ACIAR Regional Cocoa Project – HORT/3014/078

Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR): Aligning genetic resources, production, and post-harvest systems to market opportunities for Pacific island and Australian cocoa

September 30, 2021: Cocoa farmers residing in the districts of Vaisigano 1 and 2, Falealupo, Alatuaia i Sisifo, and Salega East benefited from the first round of the local Cocoa Fermentation competition implemented by the Scientific Research Organisation of Samoa SROS.

One of the objectives for this regional project is ‘to evaluate the opportunities for Pacific cocoa industries to expand the value of their markets related to quality attributes and industry organisations’. The activities aim to assess bean quality through local competitions and linking to buyers for niche markets so Samoan cocoa is able to compete in the high-value, low-volume markets based on fine flavor and ‘single origin’ branding.
